I'm honored[ˈɑnərd 荣幸] to be with you today for your commencement[kəˈmɛnsmənt 开始] from one of the finest universities in the world.

truth[truθ 真相] be told, I never graduated from college and this is the closest I've ever gotten to[到达，开始] a college graduation[græʤəˈweɪʃən 毕业].

Today, I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal[dil 交易]. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting[kəˈnɛktɪŋ 连接] the dots[dɑts 点].

I dropped out of[出于，缺少] reed[rid 芦苇] College after the first six months but then stayed around as a drop[drɔp 降低]-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit[kwɪt 辞职].

So why'd I drop[drɔp 降低] out? It started before I was born.

Except that when I popped out, they decided at the last minute that they really wanted[ˈwɔntɪd 通缉] a girl.

So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of[在…中间] the night asking,

My biological[baɪəˈlɑʤɪkəl 生物] mother found out[发现，查明] later that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school.

This was the start in my life.

And 17 years later, I did go to college, but I naively[nɑˈivli 天真地] chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford

After six months, I couldn't see the value[ˈvælju 价值] in it.

And here I was spending[ˈspɛndɪŋ 开支] all the money my parents had saved their entire life.

It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back[回顾], it was one of the best decisions[dɪˈsɪʒənz 决定] I ever made.

The minute I dropped out, I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me

and begin dropping in on the ones that looked far more interesting.

It wasn't all romantic[roʊˈmæntɪk 浪漫的].

I didn't have a dorm[dɔrm 宿舍] room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms.

I returned Coke bottles for the five-cent deposits[dɪˈpɑzəts 存款] to buy food with.

And I would walk the seven miles across town every Sunday night to get on[上车，进展]e good meal a week at the Hari Krishna temple[ˈtɛmpəl 寺庙].

I loved it.

Let me give you one example.

Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal[ˈnɔrməl 普通的] classes,

I learned about serif and sans serif typefaces,

about what makes great typography great.

And I found[faʊnd 成立] it fascinating.

But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer,

It was the first computer with beautiful typography.

My second story is about love and loss[lɔs 损失].

I was lucky[ˈləki 幸运的].

I found[faʊnd 成立] what I love to do early in life.

Waz and I started Apple in my parents' garage[gərɑʒ 车库] when I was 20.

to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well.

and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months.

And so I decided to start over.

During the next five years, I started a company named Next,

another company named Pixar,

When I was 17, I read a quote[kwoʊt 引用] that went something like,

Because almost everything,

About a year ago, I was diagnosed with cancer[ˈkænsər 癌症].

I had a scan[skæn 扫描] at 7.30 in the morning,

Having lived through it,

No one has ever escaped it.
